Swarm! PDF Print E-mail

I guess they got too crowded. Noticed a distinct, loud hum from off in the direction of the hives a couple weeks ago when D's sister was visiting. Next thing we knew there they were up in a tree near their former home. The swam is that clump of darkness in the very center of the photo. Click on the photo to view a higher resolution image, in which you can see some of the bees flying about on the left-hand side of the photo.

One of the hives is still very crowded, the swarmed one looks much more comfortable. The bees in the in-tact colony regularly hang out in front of the hive (as if it's too crowded inside).

This year's wildlife crop is a trio of redwing blackbirds. D noticed them while brush hogging the yard around the septic drain field.

The first days (2010-06-20):

Three Redwing Blackbirds (one still in the shell)

Aren't they CUTE?!

A few days later (2010-06-23) all hatched:

Redwing Blackbirds, all hatched

So hungry!

As of 2010-06-27, they're starting to feather:

I can't believe it's been nearly a month since we last talked. Refill on that cup of coffee?

Look at these kids! They just keep growing and greening. The second crop are getting big enough to see without a magnifying glass.

There are at least two (let's call them Alice and Bill) who are ready to leave the nest and start inhaling the fresh air.

 Alice losing her tail

But there are still plenty of kids who are swimming around just enjoying the algae and other flora blooming in the puddles.

Checking the raspberries (YUM!) and potatoes today, I walked through some puddles from recent rain on the garden tarps.

puddles on tarps

I noticed something moving in one of the puddles. Wow! We have babies!

tiny tadpoles

And more! There must be at least 100 tadpoles. We recorded the mating songs of a couple Copes Grey Tree Frogs out here a few weeks ago. Didn't realize what  we were intruding on ...

 tadpoles (about 3cm long)

Sigh. Seems we have to wait 2 months for them to turn into frogs.

Had a visit from this fellow on a damp June afternoon.

turtle in the grass

He (she?) was walking around the greenhouse, and then "hopped" up on the foundation.

Didn't seem to find anything interesting and wandered back toward the river.

It's the rainy season here, and the frogs who sing to us every night are apparently leaving their marshy dwellings to check out our place. D. found this one on the back door window a few nights ago. We expect more rain today.

D caught the ice fog as the sun rose over the eastern hills. It was -35 F Friday morning. We see this ice fog mornings when the temperature is lower than -25 F.
